Overview

 

The UP Open University is launching its biennial national conference on open and distance e-learning this year. With a theme on “Reimagining Education Futures,” it highlights the competition for best paper and best practice in open and distance e-learning. The Conference welcomes applications from interested individuals for the ODeL Best Paper Award 2022 and ODeL Best Practice Award 2022.

 

The ODeL Best Paper Award recognizes individuals for innovative research studies on open and distance e-learning that contribute to the advancement of the principles and theories of open learning, distance education, e-learning, and technology-mediated learning. On the other hand, the ODeL Best Practice Award recognizes individuals or institutions for their innovative and effective implementation of the principles and practices of open learning, distance education, e-learning, and technology-mediated learning that deliver exemplary teaching-learning performance improvement.

 

The awards will be bestowed to the top one of the competing papers and be presented at NCODeL 2022, which would be held online 23-25 November 2022.

 

Eligibility Criteria

 

The competition is open to all interested individuals.

 

Mechanics of the Competition

 

  1. The competition has two categories: Best Paper and Best Practice Awards.
  2. Participating author/s should send a copy of their full paper to the Awards NCODeL Awards Committee through the online submission portal of the conference.
  3. The submission of entries shall indicate that the author/s are declaring that the papers are original and have no conflict of business interest. It also indicates that in case of multiple authorship all authors have provided their consent to the participating author/s to submit and present the paper as an entry to the competition.
  4. Submitted papers should not have been submitted, reviewed, or accepted for publication in any peer-reviewed journal at the time of submission.
  5. The entry should be typed in double space and saved as word document.
  6. The entry should follow the official template for full papers used in the conference.
  7. Only one entry per author/s will be considered in the competition. NCODeL Awards Committee reserves the right to reject any second entry.
  8. The evaluation of the entries will consist of two phases: pre-conference review and oral presentation during the conference proper.
  9. Entries shall be presented during the conference proper; otherwise, they will be disqualified.
  10. Members of the NCODeL Awards Committee shall not join the competition or shall not be connected in any way to the entry.
  11. The decision of the panel of jurors is final and shall be respected. The committee shall not entertain questions regarding the selection of the winners.

Evaluation Criteria

I. Pre-Conference Evaluation

  1. Originality (35%) – the paper should have originality of contribution to knowledge with emphasis on innovativeness in theory development, empirical results, and policy formulation
  2. Quality of Argument (30%) – the argument incorporates critical analysis of concepts, theories and findings, and consistency and coherence of debate
  3. Positioning (20%) – the paper has a clear position in the existing literature (international or national) and has a conclusion that is both convincing and of significant potential
  4. Writing Style (15%) – Quality of writing style in terms of accuracy, clarity, readability, and organization of the paper
  1. Impact (20%) – The practice has demonstrated positive effects or impacts, applicability, and benefits to the ODeL practice and well-being of students or communities as evidenced by documented outcomes of the practice or empirical data.
  2. Demonstrated Potential for Equity and Quality (20%) – The practice shows potential for enhancing equity and quality in ODeL implementation and management.
  3. Collaboration (20%) – The practice builds effective partnerships among various stakeholders of open learning, distance education, e-learning, or technology-mediated learning. 
  4. Objectives (20%) – The practice addresses one or two concerns in ODeL practice including enhancing openness, quality, equity, and/or sustainability.
  5. Writing Style (20%) – Quality of writing style in terms of accuracy, clarity, readability, and organization of the paper

Conference Oral Presentation

 

Criteria

 

  1. Clarity (20%) – The presentation is well thought of; the presenter uses proper language; significance is clearly stated; previous work sets the stage for this study.
  2. Content (20%) – Content presented identifies the research; question or work and exhibits an advanced understanding of the approach or work and significance; it is scientifically rigorous and well researched.
  3. Style/Delivery (20%) – Uses time wisely; there is a logical progression; presenter speaks with good pacing and makes eye contact; does not read information but uses engaging tone and vocabulary  
  4. Use of Visual Aids (20%) – Well placed images; charts summarize data and/or conclusions; size and labels are clear; very little text; figures and images explained and described well
  5. Ability to Answer Questions (20%) – Anticipates audience questions; understands audience questions; can integrate knowledge to answer questions; thoroughly responds to questions

 

Deadline of Submission

 

All entries for the two awards should be submitted on or before 23 October 2022.
